How to be a Smart Car Renter

By Calvin Wapasa

The wise car renter knows that there are certain steps that need to be followed if the best deal is to be had.

The best thing to do initially is to find three or four car rental companies in the local phone book or the internet of course. Take your time, because it is not a race, so look carefully and try not to miss any out.

Contact the agency and ask about their special offers, location, availability, pickup sites, rates, special rates. Also check on hotel and airline partnerships, extra charges, insurance, everything you can think of that can help lower what you have to pay for your car rental, or what would make the car rental more convenient for you.

Your pickup point schedule will vary with each rental company, some will drop off at your door, others will have designated collection point and some may even pay for your cab fare to collect your vehicle. It's nice having a large car, the comfort can't be beat but it comes at a cost so if you are on a budget, stick to what you need.

Reserving the vehicle of your choice is a good idea but depending on the car rental company you decide on using, it can come at a price.

For those of you just on a budget then here are some more tips on how to save money.

Watch out for free upgrade offers and collect your car as early as you can in the morning.

The great thing about arriving at the car rental office early is there is a good chance that you will get a larger vehicle free of charge as there will probably be shortage of lower grade cars.

Often considerable car rental discounts are available online as more companies compete there so it may be worth checking there first. There are companies online where all you have to do is give them your budget and they do the rest, so how easy is that.

Fill the gas tank before you return your car, car rentals will charge you, at an inflated price, the cost of the gas needed to fill the tank.

For a really easy vacation, why not have a go at the fly-drive package option where you won't even have to worry about the flight or even try one that looks after the accommodation as well. Simple visit your travel representative or even try looking online.

Often car rental companies will give a discount on a rental if you have frequent flyer discounts which they will exchange. This may not be the best choice if there is a long life on your frequent flyer discount as you may want to use it before it expires.

Just remember, the discounts are there but you must ask as they won't be offered so don't be shy because you will gain nothing from it. - 21392
