Safety Shower Required In Work Environment

By Louise Jones

Accidental exposure can occur even when there are good safety precautions and good emergency controls in place. So, it is essential to provide safety equipment like goggles, boots, gloves, shields, and other protective equipment. Safety showers and eyewash stations must be provided to minimize the exposure to hazardous chemicals.

The first 10 seconds are critical after a person has been exposed to any hazardous substance. Any delay, even of a few seconds can cause serious injury. Safety showers can also be used to wash off corrosive contaminants from clothing and to extinguish fire from clothing. The distance of a safety shower should not be more then 50 to 100 feet from the work area. In case highly corrosive chemicals are being used then the distance from work place to the safety shower should not exceed 20 feet. There should not be any obstacles on the way from the work area to the safety shower.

The safety shower should have a diameter of at least 20 inches so that the entire body is sprayed with the shower and not just the head. The safety shower should be designed such that it gets turned on in a second. The handle, lever, or knob to turn on the safety shower should be unobstructed. The flushing fluid in the safety shower should either be drinkable water, preserved water, or any medically acceptable solution.

There should be sufficient amount of water in the safety shower to allow the user to shower for at least 20 minutes. The water temperature in a safety shower should be lukewarm and the water pressure should be stumpy. High temperature and high pressure showers can be damaging. For mild irritants a minimum 5 minutes shower is suggested. For reasonable to stern irritants and non incisive corrosives the shower time should be increased to 20 minutes. For piercing corrosives the time should be 60 minutes.

A new pair of coveralls and foot wear should be accessible in the protection shower area. The safety showers should be checked cyclically to determine they are in working situation. A mechanical alarm should be triggered when a safety shower is in use and support medicinal awareness should be activated.

Laboratories, high dirt areas, perilous material filling and giving out areas, and where showering is done should have security showers fixed. The security showers should be set up close to an exit, and on the same floor where the work is being done.

The amount of security showers compulsory to be installed in a work place will hinge on two factors. First, how high are the chances of workers getting into an accident? Secondly, how many workers work in that area? The confined safety board and their practice should be followed in making this conclusion. The safety shower equipment to be installed and what flushing fluid to use may be coordinated by the local safety board.

In any unsafe working milieu, safety showers are the second line of security. Therefore, they should be treated like any other safety gear which means that their preservation, cyclic checks, and refilling etc must be regulated. Security showers can make the variation between a minor wound and a victim. - 21392
