Fighting Traffic Tickets Can Cost Money, Try To Avoid Getting Them

By Pete Malcolm

Fighting traffic tickets is a real hassle. It results in time missed from work, possible fines to pay, higher insurance premiums, and more. Sometimes persuading a police officer to not give you a ticket is better. Understand, persuade does not mean bribe, or otherwise break the law. Rather convince him or her why they would rather not give you one.

The first thing to do when trying to avoid a traffic ticket, is to obey the law. Pull the vehicle over as soon as you notice the siren or lights flashing. Make sure to pull into a safe place, away from traffic, and turn on the hazard lights. Using these safety measures will likely give the officer the impression that you are a responsible, concerned driver.

Shut the radio off immediately. Even if it is your favorite oldies song that they almost never play, do not just turn it down. Anything which seems like it may have distracted from your driving could result in getting a ticket.

Open the vehicle's window before the officer approaches the vehicle. If he or she has to motion for you to do so, you already have a problem. Keep your hands on the steering wheel unless you are asked to get your license and registration. Then, do not simply reach out for them. Understandably this will create concern in an individual who works a potentially dangerous job. Instead say to the officer "they are in the glove box, my purse, in the back seat, etc.".

Keep all passengers quiet and seated while the officer is at your vehicle. Do not allow anyone, including yourself to attempt to open any doors. Some individuals have made this mistake, and it did not end well.

Most police officers will begin by asking you if you know why you have been stopped. The answer to this question is never yes. This is unless the car is on fire... Always allow the officer to tell you why you have been stopped. Be apologetic for the situation. If you are stilled issued a ticket, do not simply pay it, plead not guilty. Keep in mind that the longer you can delay the court date, the better your chances are of winning by default. Do not lie if you must go to court. Have a concrete explanation as to why you are not guilty.

Remember, if you want to avoid traffic tickets always be polite and respectful to the officer that pulls you over. - 21392
