Active Crossover In A Car Stereo System

By Henry Woody

The following article shows how to set an active crossover. They are important for all audio system. By means of frequency the signals are filtered and for better clarity they are directed to the best amplifier and speakers. Generally any car audio system should have an active crossover to be used. They are also used in public meetings and in theatres mostly. An audio system namely the tri-amped is an active crossover and is needed to install the crossovers.

First the crossover is mounted between the system's amplifiers and the stereo unit. If it is not planned to adjust the crossover after installing, the crossovers are placed in back of the race panels and that option is considered to be good. The cross over unit is installed near the amplifier and so the access to control it can be made easy.

The first step in this task is to choose a location for the mounting of the active cross over some where in between the amplifier of the system and the stereo head unit. The cross over is then mounted in the chosen location. Keeping the cross overs behind the car's dash panel seems to be a good option in cases where you do not want to adjust the cross over later. Installing it in the trunk or under the seat would be a good option if you prefer to have direct controls on the cross over.

The active cross overs audio output is connected to the stereo unit's audio connections. The appropriate amplifier is chosen and then each cross overs output is connected to it. The necessary electrical connections are made initially. A 12 volt DC power is required for the cross over to run. The other essential thing is a power supply to the car's battery.

The required electrical connections are made. Since the crossover uses twelve volt direct current connection it needs a connection with the battery. Additional connections are to be made to the chassis of the car for the ground line. It is advisable to connect to the electrical signal that is switched on by the ignition. This ensures that the battery is not drained.

The low pass of the crossover is set at 8o Hz. This ensures that sound below this frequency is passed to the subwoofer amplifier. The high pass is set at 3000Hz. This passes the sound above this frequency to the tweeters.

Next the band pass filter is set for the system's midrange speakers. Then the amplifiers are set at low frequencies less than 80 Hertz also it is greater than 3000 HZ.

Then a typical music is played through the system and respective filters are adjusted so that it would match the amplifiers and speakers. If suppose one filter range is adjusted others also require the same to compensate for the one adjusted. If the low pass is changed to a value of 90 HZ then a change should be done on the band pass band pass to have the frequency at 90 HZ than to have a value of 80 though there is a chance for the overlap. Sometimes it may be useful which depends on the system. Thus the article shows how to set up active crossovers in a suitable place to adjust some problems occurring later. The frequency should also be checked that it should not damage the speakers. - 21392
