Cheaper Teen Auto Insurance -- Stuff Kids Can Do

By Chimezirim Odimba

So your teen is now old enough to drive? While this should be a joyful moment, many parents remember it with some mixed feelings. Apart from safety concerns (we all know that teen driver statistics are far from pleasant), there are also money issues. Sure, you'd spend more on gas now. As if that wasn't tough enough, this teen driver could drive up your rate by as much as 200%. Is there anything your teen can do to help you cut down costs? A lot! Here are those steps...

Because of time and space constraint, I'll give you a list of several tips (I'll only dwell on one)...

1. Let your kid pay at least part of the bill if they must drive. If they are responsible for paying part of the bills they'll be more open to suggestions that will reduce your rate.

2. You don't really need collision/comprehensive coverage types on old cars. So, if it won't break your teen's heart, let him/her be made the secondary driver on your oldest car.

3. As much as possible, ensure your teen does NOT learn to drive from other kids. If they've done that, let them upgrade their driving skills at a certified defensive driving center. Beyond the fact that insurers will reward such with lower rates, your kid would be the safer for it.

4. Good grades help. So let your teen endeavor to get straight A's but nothing less than B's. Auto insurers believe students who maintain good grades are less prone to recklessness.

5. Let your teen use a car that has a high safety rating.

6. Whenever they can, let your teen use the public transport system. It will cut down mileage and reduce your rates. And did I point out that you'll save on gas too?

7. Teens are very comfortable with the internet (We all know how hard it is to get them off those computers). Let this work to your mutual benefit...

If you want to do extensive comparison shopping, then your teen can help you out. Don't they have more time on their hands than you do?

Let them know that you're looking for the best rate that also gives you the right protection. They'd have to get and compare quotes from five or more quotes sites (Could be a pain for you to do but quite easy for the average teen).

Let them shortlist the most affordable quotes. You can easily check this list to ensure you have the best in price and value. Some folks have saved over $1,000 by doing this right. - 21392
