Precautions Against DUI

By Richard Milford

Accidents on the road are most commonly the result of people under the influence of alcohol, drugs and some medications which in turn cause a person to lose focus and concentration.

Since driving under the influence has been abhorred by the majority of states, laws have been set up that target those that commit this offense. These laws are for the protection of innocent people on the road and the driver who commits the offense and they were made with the intention of solving this long-time problem.

Probably the one most common direct causes of DUI (driving under the influence) is alcohol, although other substances can also be responsible for it. It is the main culprit which causes reckless driving.

This often happens when people are out for the evening having a good time. All it takes is for shots to be handed out while everyone is in a good mood and the fact that the drive home is inevitable is neglected.

Another cause that causes drivers to lose grasp of their faculties is drugs. These drugs that lead to a lethargic and high feeling could be in any form. Some use marijuana, while some use the stronger, methamphetamine.

This is a problem that is quite common among the long distance truck drivers, especially at night, to keep them awake. This is because drugs not only keeps them awake at night, but can help them to last for days. Some drivers find this practice alright while others don't because they feel that it is ok for the job duration, but not for days.

While it is true that there are sanctions handed down by the government to prevent persons from driving under the influence, it is also a must to set more prohibitory laws against the acquisition of alcohol or drugs especially of minors. Most number of DUI related road accidents are perpetrated by minors. More focus should be given in educating minors about the fatal consequences of DUI.

The penalties imposed for DUI offenses vary in every state. Some states have lighter penalties than other states. These penalties may include fines, jail time, and suspension of license. Even first offenders don't escape these penalties. Second offenders and more delinquent offenders are meted out with much graver punishments such as higher fines, longer imprisonment, and a longer duration of the license being suspended.

The authorities are being more wary of this type of offense due to the fatalities that it has brought. In a year, the accumulated number of alcohol related accidents reached more than a thousand, the reason why authorities are very diligent in apprehending persons who are driving under the influence.

As the saying goes, better safe than sorry. It is a wise one to keep in mind if you are planning to have any drinks for whatever occasion or reason. Too many believe that they can resist alcohols effect but it is not true and there will be consequences for their actions. A better way to go is have someone give you a ride home or better yet drop you off and pick you up, even if you think it's troublesome. Doing so will let you enjoy yourself and act responsibly. - 21392
