The Process of Plastic Injection Molding

In order to determine if, and how, plastic injection molding will be able to save you money, it is first important to understand exactly what plastic injection molding is and how it works. Plastic injection molding is the forcing of hot, melted plastic in to various molds in order to create pieces and parts that, when combined, make the product that it is being built whole. Plastic injection molding is often quite beneficial and is used when the traditional means of making parts is tedious and time consuming.

Companies have adopted this technology because of the cost benefit it provides them during the production process. Not only can they save an incredible amount of labor in the production of their products, but by ensuring uniformity throughout their product, they can avoid the mistakes of manufacturing that lead to whole batches of product needing to be remade, thus saving an enormous amount of money, too.

The process, which involves the forcing of super hot, melted plastic in to metal molds, ensures that all products are created to specification each and every time. This specification is determined by the size and shape of the molds being used and ensures there are no errors in the dimensions of the product so it fits as it should within the larger component it is being made for.

This ensures uniformity across the board and eliminates costly production errors that may produce 450,000 of the doll hand correctly, but creates flaws in the remaining 50,000 only for the company to have to redo those doll parts. Obviously, this type of error would cost them a considerable amount of time and money and it could all be avoided with by using plastic injection molding machinery in the production process.

Something to keep in mind, however, is that the initial inception of incorporating plastic injection molding machinery in to the production process is not cheap. You will need to purchase and have made the metal molds that need to be used in the product manufacturing, it is for this reason that a cost benefit analysis should be conducted to determine the viability of using plastic injection molding.
